From slope degrees to crossing gravel drives, these are the dos and don’ts for safe and effective self-propelled mower operation.
Know your yard. Self-propelled mowers are great on gentle to moderate slopes (under 15°), but should never be used on steep inclines. Always mow side-to-side on slopes for stability and safety.
Let the mower do the work—don’t push it forward. Engage the drive mechanism fully on flat or uphill terrain, and release it when turning or maneuvering in tight spaces.
Avoid crossing gravel paths or driveways while mowing. Spinning blades can eject small rocks at high speeds, risking injury or equipment damage. Stop the blade and lift the deck when crossing such surfaces.
Mowing through heavy or wet grass can clog the mower deck and strain the drive system. If needed, mow in shorter passes or use a higher cutting height setting.
Clean the underside of the mower regularly and check the drive belt, air filter, and blade sharpness every few uses. Routine care ensures smooth self-propelled operation and longer equipment life.
